Computer Science is as much math as it is computers. Much of the work in CS is designing algorithms, which are often independent of the computers they will be used on.

If you enjoy working with computers, but don't know much, and want to go into a technical field like programming or systems analysis, then CS should be fine for you, but you also need to like math. If you're not fond of either computers or math, then it's definitely the wrong major.

If you just want to learn about computers, there are many courses available that teach you how to use them. CS is an in-depth approach to the mathematics in computers, not a way to learn how to use them.

Not necessarily. If you learn easily and find tutoring to help you out in your weak areas, you should be able to get good grades and succeed in computer science. You should examine your motives for choosing this field. If this is something in which you have a genuine interest, success will come easier. Speak to a councilor at the school with which you intend to enroll, and inquire about what type of introductory or background courses are available.

You'd certainly know a lot about it by the time you finished!
All kidding aside, check with a counselor to find out what the entry requirements are. Sometimes there is a pre-requisite, which will put you on an even footing and give you a good chance at doing well in the course.
Good luck with it!

I think most people who appear to know a lot about computers just really are spending a lot of time on them playing with each and every application, feature, whatever. They don't know the actual how and why of the computer's function any better than many others.
If you're really into all this electronics and digital stuff, go for it.

It'd make it a whole lot easier if you did, but the reason why you're going to school would be to learn it, so, it probably wouldn't be a horrible idea.

However, it's a good idea to know your math.

Edit: Also, CompSci is not a booming field as it used to be, there is much competition for jobs, from other people around here, and from outsourcing abroad.

not a bad idea if you're willing to put in the effort to study and learn.

you don't have to know much to start out with if you put in the effort to learn as you go. having a strong baseline of computer knowledge helps, but isn't required.

You might want to do some self study prior to going into the field. Buy some books at the store and start doing some reading/research, at some point you'll have to figure out what you want to concentrate in.

Well it would be a good idea to take some low level computer courses first, but computers are a quickly growing necessity for this economy, and I would DEFINITELY reccomend majoring in that field.

I'm majoring in it myself!
*Best answer please!*
