See, this is my problem -
I told 1 person in my class that i wanted to get my tongue pierced when i got older - I WAS KIDDING! - and then the person i told, told everyone i guess, and now everyone thinks im gothic. But im not! Isnt there a difference between a goth that doesnt believe in god and wears black all the time and worships the devil, and a punk person that believes in a religion and just acts tough and thinks skulls and studs are cool? Is there a difference? Because i have changed though, im not punk or goth, and i never really was. I wish everyone at my school would just shut up. Who else thinks theres a dif?

piercing your tongue is not a "gpth" or "punk" thing to do, just to clear things up... i've seen many people who look neither goth nor punk with tongue rings and other such piercings...

goth and punk are both subcultures derived from different types of music that started back in the seventies and eighties. i don't claim to know much about goth rock and the whole goth scene, because that's definitely not my thing, and saying that they're all depressed and only wear black would be completely stereotyping them. i've known a few goth kids and have seen a bunch, and i know for a fact that a lot of them like to write poetry and are into the whole gothic thing (vampires, fantasy, whatever). also, goth kids can wear typically all black or all white, but then again there are those who go against the grain and wear whatever the heck they want...

punk is much more my thing (i really could go on about it all day). it too is derived from music and then became a subculture. it's all about the music (for me at least) - going to shows, playing in shows, whatever... some people dress punk but aren't and some people are punk but dress however they want (meaning no hair-dyeing, bondage straps, chokers and whatever other stereotypes there are out there). so, yeah, there is a HUGE difference between goth and punk, but wither way that shouldn't have any affect on getting your tongue pierced or not (even hypothetically)...

Well, Goth is, I guess you could say a subculture somewhat in the way that punk is. The "Goth Rock" scene took off from the Punk Scene the late 70s - early 80s. Goth is associated with specific types of music and dress. A lot of "dark" things influence the Goth culture; horror films, 19th century literature, romanticism is a huge part. Most Goths wear lots of black clothing, makeup for guys and girls, etc. Not all Goths are Atheists as many believe; they have many religious backgrounds, as do Punks. Punk, like I said is also a subculture. It started with the music of "Punk Rock" in the 70s. There are many different types of Punk scenes; they tend to link very closely with the music their scene is related to, in their beliefs, dress, literature, etc. All Punk scenes are really pretty different, though most people think of Street Punks with their Mohawks, boots, and studded leather jackets. No however, people who are not directly associated with Punk or Goth culture lump them together, mainly based on their ignorance of the said culture. I have heard people say..."I am so punk, I buy everything at Hottopic." Well, I highly doubt any true Punk would ever shop at that store. Also, you may have heard the, "If you say you're punk then you aren't." Actually Punks as well as Goths identify them selves as such, they know what they like and believe, and they wish to be associated with this culture.

Getting you tongue pierced doesn't make you anything accept a person with a pierced tongue.

Also, I based my answer on personal experiences and research done getting into my friends heads. Ha ha.

Punk was the original, the first. It started here in the UK in the late 70's. The music and look was aggresive, confrontational and put together with everything and anything. There were no rules with punk, it was total DIY. This has changed a lot over the years especially in the USA where it is a watered down version, made popular by the so called punk bands like Green Day. Goth followed in the 80's and was originally called Gothic Punk. The look was more 'glam' with lots of black backcombed hair, white faces and dark eye make up, the clothes more like victorian corsets, long skirts, lots of lace and pointy boots. The music was dark, atmospheric and gloomy. Again this has changed over the years. Emo is the newer of the three and as I am too old to be listening to the likes of My Chemical Romance and the like I will leave this genre to be explained by someone who has more knowledge than I.

There is A HUGE difference....listen to groups like Rammstein, Bauhaus, Einsterzende Neubaten, Sisters of Mercy which are a few goth bands and definitely the better bands..

then listen to Dead Kennedy's, Dead Milkmen, Sex Pistols, early Black Flag.

that is just the musical difference..the attitude behind each is equally different.

yeah
goths-slit their rists, dress in black, in some cases they use a form of witchcraft, are depressed and don't say much, etc.
punks-can dress in black, but in a more prep way, wristbands, spike up the hair, etc.
my best friend is punk but he def. is not goth. he used to be depressed but now he is basically punk because he doesn't always wear black, he is happy with life for the most part, he has energy and loves to talk, he is fun to be around, etc.
i know it's hard to explain and understand, but there is a slight difference. i hope i answered your question! have a nice day! : )

There is a BIG difference. Nice stereotyping by the way. Those people are stupid, you don't need to be goth or punk or whatever to get your tongue pierced.
