Introduce yourself with a smile and offer a handshake. After that, ask the person where they are from, etc. Be yourself, and be at ease. Many people are just as uncomfortable as you are. And, most people want to be friendly.

I've got to totally agree with the person who answered first. A big smile will draw people to you, and you then introduce yourself. If you're at a conference, you've already got something in common with them. You can start the conversation by asking them about the organization that they represent.

Find something good about the person and give a true compliment (60% ture would do). And yes be creative at the time of compliments.
