This art of democracy that the West insists on shoving down the throats of the world, in my view serves the political classes. Unless you live in Australia, where a true democracy is in use, the majority actually lose out in all cases. In Australia, it is against the law not to vote. This ensures the outcome is true and representative.

pachl@sbcglo..., I absolutely agree with your final point, however that politician will be transparent and I could then track his actions subsequent to voting for him. However, the position in the US is untenable, where one votes for a party rather than a policy.

That depends on what you consider the Republican Agenda. No we are not a Democracy we are a representative republic. The Liberal press and public schools are lying to you. I suggest doing some research on your own. I would start with a book called Fed Ed (sorry don't remember the author's name) It could be a real eye opener.

If there was a box on the ballot paper so you could vote to change the whole corrupt exploitative system then it would be a good idea to make people vote.

If you just want legitimize a system that represents only the rich elite, then sure, make people vote in our so called democracy.

First, let me compliment Australia. It is one of the few countries willing to stand up to the Islama-fascist thugs in the Middle East. You are one of the few substantial countries comprising the "coalition of the willing"

Regarding compulsory voting, here's my view: if someone is so disinterested in politics that he doesn't even want to bother voting, how will forcing him to either put an "X" in Box-A, or Box-B improve anything? His choice won't be based on any ideology or personal knowledge. He'll just randomly choose one, and then go to Bondi Beach for the rest of the day.

Maybe the advantage is that no one can complain they were excluded from the political process; I just don't know.

You can answer this: doesn't forcing everyone to vote just encourage candidates to shamelessly pander to single-interest voters? For example, if you have a candidate who is for tougher immigration standards, wouldn't he just emphasize that part of his platform?

I doubt that 65% of America is anti-Republican. Why would they be? We also make sure that the oil companies don't charge you the suggested (by us) $6 a gallon, by hiring representatives to irresponsible to deliver the letter to them.

Statistically approximately 48% of registered voters are Republican and 48% are Democrat here in the USA with a token minority belonging to other parties. So you're entire premise is wrong.

Even so, it does not ensure that you have informed voters. That is something government cannot legislate. If a good deal of voters are irresponsible and uninformed, is the outcome still considered true and representative?
