I can't find the hyphen on my keyboard. I know there's the small hyphen, -, but not the long one that looks like --. I tried all the alts, but still couldn't find it. Do I need to download a different font? I don't know... Help?

The long hyphen isn't on the keyboard. In Word, you just type "--" and then a word after it. When you hit spacebar, the hyphen turns into a longer one. If you want the long hyphen elsewhere, you either have to generate it in Word, or you can use the character map program in "all programs->accessories->system tools". If you look long enough, you can find it...
Here it is for you: "–"

Some programs do it automatically, when you put two -'s together... I think WordPerfect is one of 'em, but it may depend on the font...

...The best was old school Word... It did it automatically when you type -, then a word, then a space... Pretty much exactly the circumstance where you want that type of hyphen...

...When I want those, I often find one online n' copy n' paste it, heh...
