Don't cash it! It's a scam! The check will be bad, but the money they take out of your account will be real.

It's a scam. As soon as the person whose bank account is being drained realizes they have money missing, your bank will take the $2996 back. If you simply cash the check through the bank it is drawn on (instead of depositing it) then THAT bank will come after you. You'll have given your ID to cash the check... some banks even fingerprint you. At the very least, you'll have to give the money back (assuming you don't sent the $2996 back to the scammers to get the big money) and you probably will end up talking to the police for a bit, if not downright charged with fraud.
Just because the check came through the mail does not mean you can keep it. If someone met you in person and gave you a bad check to cash, you wouldn't expect to keep the money. The mail does not make it any different.

Let's see, you think it might be a scam so you want to 'get someone else' to cash it so that you wont have any blame. NICE!!! My mouth is literally hanging open. I actually had to re read your question to make sure that you wrote that! You are an azzhole and there is no nice way to put it! You know or suspect that this is a fraud yet you dont mind using innocent person to cash the check! That person will cash it based on what he thinks is a friendship with you and as a result HE WILL GO TO JAIL/ obtain fraud charges etc and not you! WOW!! But I assume that birds of a feather flock together so you probably have 'friends' who are used to this kind of treatment as you were probably all comrades in the pen together anyway. You are officially todays clear winner of the azzhole award!

It is likely absolutely worthless. Did you actually enter that lottery? Does the British Random Lotto even exist?
My bf got a money order in the mail a few months back. It was mailed from Greece and had absolutely no explanation to it. It was a US postal order.
We were instantly suspicious but the first check cashing place said it looked okay.
We played it safe and took it to the Post Office on Monday. It was a fake.
Had we cashed it or put it in our account, we would have had big problems.

DO NOT CASH THAT ******* CHECK! Believe me. I know that it's very tempting. Let me tell u my story. I received a cashier's check in the mail for $4800.00. The check was real! It was sent by somebody in Canada. I called the number on the letter and a guy named "MIKE" told me I won 1 million dollars. All that I had to do was deposit the money in my bank account and then send a money gram to Canada because supposedly, I was paying for the taxes on the money. Like a dumb ***, I did exactly what they told me to do. I ended up filing a police report. I even personally spoke with an FBI agent in charge on the investigation on these thieves because I'm not the only dumb *** who've made this mistake. Now my bank account has been closed. I have a collection agency on my *** on paying back the $4800. So please, please. Take my advice. Save urself alot of headace. BELIEVE ME!!!!!

Trust me. The check is fake. I received a check in the mail claiming that I had won some sweepstakes that I had never entered. I decided to have a rep at my bank look at it, and she told me it was fake. People don't scam you by sending you money. Then it wouldn't be much of a scam, now would it?

I saw something like this on the people's court and the person ended up having to pay everything back, he was out like $1000, or something. The deal was were he cashed the check and kept a certain amount for himself and then sent so much to this company. A week later or something the check bounced and he had to pay it all back as well as the fees.

I received the same check and letter in the mail. I had the same thoughts that you did "is it real" it looks real. I will not be cashing mine, because our local news did a piece on another one like this one and the guy did cash his check and ended up owing his bank all of the money, plus overdraft fees. DON'T CASH THAT CHECK, IT JUST MEANS TROUBLE!!!

i had someone sent me a check and asked that i cashed it and sent 3000 to him and i could keep 2000. i didnt think this was a scam but just incase i cashed the check and had it on hold to make sure it cleared. i could only have 100 of it until it cleared. the check DID NOT clear. soo i would say when u cash it have them hold it until it clears, if u cash it and it dont clear YOU owe that money to the bank!!
