The cost you're hearing is probably what was required for the car's research and development. Hydrogen technology is still in its early stages, and the cost of developing a prototype is not necessarily an indicator of what the final sticker price will be on the showroom floor once these cars are mass-produced on assembly lines.

As for whether it's safe, critics of hydrogen tend to forget that gasoline is flammable as well. Whatever final distribution system is decided on for hydrogen, it's difficult to imagine it being any more dangerous than what we have now.
