I actually live in SW Houston and until last year I had not seen so much crime in my part of town. Many of it is gang related such as gangs from Latin America and New Orleans. I feel safe in my neighborhood (I live five minutes from the Galleria) but if I ever happen to drive further into the SW (Fondren or Belfort), I make sure to get out of there ASAP.

Well I stay on the far northeast side of Houston & really the crime rate here is the same. But for my family members that stay on the SW side of Houston, crime has rise a lot. I do not want to place the blame of the Katrina evacuees but there are a lot of felons, gang members & rapist out there that are on the loose that came from New Orleans, which did have the highest crime rate in the US. But it also have to do a lot with Houstonians claiming their grounds, their hoods, their streets. Its mainly conflict.

No. I live in the west end and work in the east end.
Never been threatened.
Some petty theft.
The media latches on to the fact that guns are legal but we have a big state and hunting is a sport.
Houstonians are from all over the world and not a homogenous bunch of cowboys like the media may have you think. Hispanics are the new majority and they are mostly family oriented and Catholic. Serious crimes among this group are mainly between friends and family members.
Come visit. I think that you will find Houstonians friendly and welcoming.

The crime rate was dropping here, but it's been going back up since a lot of the riff raff from New Orleans came here.Still not bad for a city this size & it all depends on what part of town as well.

It's no big deal, when you have 3.1 Million people living in one City, the numbers are higher than any small city would be.
Not a bad place to live, if you just use your head.
