The price of gas affects the prices of EVERYTHING.

The cost of natural gas does not follow far behind. However, those who control the price of gas do not care about those that have to pay higher prices for heating, groceries (because food has to be transported from terminal centres to the stores), any type of travel, etc.

Everything goes up except our incomes.

As you your question, yes, if one form of energy goes up, they all seem to go up. Many business can run their heating systems on multiple fuel sources, so if oil goes up high, they can change to, maybe, propane. If enought companies to this, it creates a greated demand for propane, resulting in dwindling supplies and the prices go up.

As to the rest of the question, your fingers were in gear, your brain was in neutral.
