You may have a stuck "rollover valve" in the filler neck or a blocked air tube that goes from the tank to the neck.

Make sure that the nozzle is pointed in the direction that the fuel tank fill spout is facing, and dont try to fill the tank with the fuel pump nozzle full bore, or wide open, back off a little.

The fuel guage is in the bottom of the tank, not in the fill spout!

Some times the gas nozzle is pointing in the wrong angle, and it back splashes. Try picking up on the handle while you fill it up, if you don't want to stand their and hold it, try setting it on the next notch ... not fully depressed. This will let the gas come out a little slower, and help with the back-splash.

Try the angle at which you hold the nozzle. I had this problem but figured it out. I dont have a ford. Or pull the nozzle out a bit. Its possible you may be tripping the fuel gauge.
