My favorite Neil Young recording is the acoustic medley at the end of 4 Way street. It is a combo of Loner, Ciniman Girl and Down By the River. It is freaking awesome!
Down By the River is a great guitar song. It is probably my favorite. Long May You Run is great. I really dig that HBO plays it during the credits of the 1980 hockey team documentary.
Don't Let it Bring You Down is great. Harvest Moon is freaking awesome. Cowgirl in the Sand is a freaking classic as well. Helpless is wonderful. Neddle and the Damage Done is strong.
Neil is great. For my money, I will take Down by the River as my favorite. It's tough though.

My favorite Neil Young song is, ( Rust Never Sleeps )
Every time I hear that song, it brings me back to the exact time, and place, that I first herd it. I think Neil Young is a musical Genius. I saw him live, a couple of times, at the Beacon Theater, in N.Y.C. I will never forget those shows, He totally connected, with every person, in the audience. He played many of his great old songs, mixed in with a few of his new ones. I love his old music. If you ever have a chance to see him live, don't miss that opportunity, you will never forget it.

Heart of Gold- happens to be on my favorite album Harvest.
And Why...I dig the entire groove of that song and entire album. It's all warm and toasty. My mother would play that album during holiday's and celebrations- nice memories.
I like so many of his songs, that was a bit difficult but at the start my head said HOG in the end my heart said..... Heart of Gold.
My answer remains-

"Here We Are In The Years"- The year, 1969. Why? It brings us back to a place (parking!) when we were dating, when we "thought" life couldn't get much better than it was. Little did we know that 38 years later, life would be better than anyone could ever imagine and the lyrics would once again ring true.

"The needle and the damage done".
In the 70's I moved to Florida for a time and met a friend who was heavily addicted to heroin. That was his favorite song. Before I moved back to Illinois he met a beautiful-hearted girl who was a former heroin addict. They fell in love, she made him clean up, and he completely turned his life around.
To this day when I hear that song I think of them and the power of love.

"Don't Let It Bring You Down" is one of many.
That particular song moves me b/c of the somber sound. The play between the piano & bass sounds so rich & *almost* dissonant.
