I recommend the Honda Civic, which received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest rating. It also gets 30 mpg in the city and up to 40 mpg highway.

SUVs have a higher risk of rollover because of their high center of gravity, and they're notorious for their awful gas mileage. They're also expensive. Smaller cars tend to be cheaper and more fuel efficient, but also fare worse in an accident. Hybrid cars get the best mileage, especially the Prius and Insight, but they're more expensive than comparable non-hybrids. Everything is a tradeoff!

Autos.msn.com has data on every available car. Parents magazine just recently did a review of the 2006 best family cars, but I recommend used cars for better value.

I think there is a government crash test rating web site that you can start from.

Forget the fuel mileage. Consider a Hummer H1 This machine is looked down upon by many, but it has a lot going for it. Mass, height, construction and durability. Remember what it was originally built for.
