if LOG4(x) = 1/2, then

4^LOG4(X) = 4^(1/2)

The left hand side is just X

The right hand side is the square root of 4 -- or 2

so X = 2

Convert to an algebraic expression:

4^(1/2) = x
2 = x

In logarithms, the subscript number is the base. The number to the right of the equal sign is the exponent, and the other number is the value of the base-exponent expression. Make sense?

log (base x) y = z converts to

x^z = y

log(4)x = (1/2)
4^(1/2) = x
x = -2 or 2

since x can't be negative because it would give you a value that is undefined

x = 2

log(4) x = 1/2?

Take the square root of 4.

The general formula is this:

n = k^x iff log(k) n = x.
log(k) n = x iff n = k^x.

(iff = if and only if)

x = 2.
