He didn't. it is a heavily promoted misinterpretation of something he said in a Wolf blitzer interview regarding his promotion of the internet in Congress.
Urban legends:
""During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.

Clearly, although Gore's phrasing was clumsy (and perhaps self-serving), he was not claiming that he "invented" the Internet (in the sense of having designed or implemented it), but that he was responsible, in an economic and legislative sense, for fostering the development ""
...
""In May 2005, the organizers of the Webby Awards for online achievements honored Al Gore with a lifetime achievement award for three decades of contributions to the Internet. "He is indeed due some thanks and consideration for his early contributions," said Vint Cerf. ""

Gee, Tyler, you "want truth, not fiction"? Try doing some research....Gore NEVER said the words "I invented the Internet". On 1999-03-09, Wolf Blitzer had an interview with Gore on CNN's Late Edition. During this interview, Gore said,

"During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

This quote has become the subject of heavy satire, however in some cases, Gore was misrepresented as having said he had "invented" the Internet rather than having "taken the initiative in creating" it. However Gore's claim to have created the Internet has been criticized by some due to the fact that ARPANET, the Internet's predecessor, existed in 1971, five years before Gore was first elected to Congress is valid, but Gore's contention is true in that his initative helped bring the net to millions of Americans.

And I'd suggest he's done a great deal more worthwhile than you'll ever do....

- Although opposed to the Vietnam War, on August 7, 1969, Gore voluntarily enlisted in the army in order to participate in the Vietnam War.

- One of Gore's accomplishments was the National Performance Review which pointed out waste, fraud, and other abuse in the federal government and stressed the need for cutting the size of the bureaucracy and the number of regulations. His book later helped guide President Clinton when he down-sized the federal government

- Gore instituted a federal program calling for all schools and libraries to be wired to the Internet. This was a culmination of work that he had started several years before. While serving in the Senate, Gore had introduced legislation which called for the creation of a new federal research center for educational computing to support an "information systems highway."

He mentioned it in the process the run as much as the 2000 elections. the actuality is he replace into attempting to place declare to having help bypass the law that enabled the boost of the internet and goofed up and mentioned "I invented the internet". He latter recanted and defined what he replace into attempting to assert. yet basically like Bush's goofs get to be laughed at and ridiculed, Gore has to roll with the punches and settle for that he mentioned "I invented the internet". I admit he did no longer propose it that way, yet that's what he mentioned. do no longer TAZE ME BRO! this is the cry of people who in user-friendly terms choose the actuality be known and for this reason i'm now ending all this sort of solutions with do no longer TAZE ME BRO!

Uh, because he's an idiot? From what I can see, he hasn't done anything worthwhile, except maybe disappear from public life for a short time after he lost the election. That is after he whined around about it first. Hopefully, he will just go away again! And maybe while he's gone, he can try to invent the next best thing to the internet. No. Probably not. He's useless.

No, didn't invent the Internet.
I was an early user of Arpanet (forerunner to internet). Ol Al had nothing to do with it. Unless maybe he was in Congress and helped pass some of the early funding bills for the grant money.

I think he thought it would impress people to claim he invented it. Of course, it just made him look like a fool.

He did not claim to invent the Internet. That is right-wing spin. He was instrumental in having laws passed which made the Internet possible for everyone to use.The Internet originally was only used only by scholars. Gore helped open it up to all Americans. To the person asking this question, I ask you this: Have you seen his movie? Have you read his book? (Not, books)

He didn't really claim to have invented the Internet. He was trying to take credit for taking economic and legislative initiatives that help bring about the Internet. There's a BIG difference.

Because it's politics. Everyone wants to claim credit successful projects. For Al Gore, he took the whole thing.

You're pulling a prank right? This issue was resolved ages ago when the original interview recording was produced and Gore had misspoken then what he really said got twisted.

Absolutely amazing that someone would bring this up considering we have an IDIOT president that IS CONSTANTLY sticking his foot down his throat by stating things he didn't mean or his words just come out wrong.

Oh ang btw, Gore was the Vice-president of the USA in case you are unaware. I'm sure you must have achieved more than that in your lifetime right? I mean who else would be such a moron to ask what had he achieved unless they had done better?

Something about him having written legislation that gave the internet the freedom to be transmitted across state lines without violating interstate commerce laws.
