well, if you are religious, such as Catholic, then the three can be the sign of the Holy Triumvirate - Father, Son and the Holy Ghost.
Ok, mathematically, 3 is a great number because it divides evenly to any number with numbers that add up to 3,6, or 9. For example, the number 578,412 is divisable evenly by 3, because if you add 5+7+8+4+1+2, you get 27, then add 2+7 you get 9. (This also is true for the number 9, and the square root of 9 is.... 3!)
Also, many sayings for the number 3:
Third time is the charm. (Realize the old saying "if at first you don't succeed, try try again" seems to hint that you conceivably should reach success on the third try)
Good things happen in threes, and its inverse, bad things happen in threes.
Three basic colors (old school): Red, Yellow and Blue
World War 3 is supposed to be the end of all that is. 3 syllables in Beef Jerky, the best snack of all time!
Of course, you could say almost anything mystical about any number, so it probably doesn't mean anything.

Things always come in 3s, especially in religion.
Catholicism: Holy Trinity. Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Wicca and Paganism: Three faces of the Goddess. Maiden, Mother and Crone.
Buddhist and Zen teachings: Karma. Send good into the world and get good 3 times back. Send negativity into the world and get cursed 3 times back.
If you've ever studdied writing, especially sketch comedy and fairy tales, characters and events always happen in three. Comedy especially.
Gnostic princaples, of which I submit myself to, teach that we have five Exit Points in our lives. That is, five places where we can chose (subconsicously) to leave this life. These are not enormous choices. It could be a "hunch" or a "feeling." Like "maybe I'll take this way home instead" or "no, I won't go to the party." These Exit Points are not evenly spaced in our lives, by any means. You might have two in one year and then not have the next until you're 50. Perhaps, if the number three is popping up constantly you are approaching your third Exit Point. No need to fear. We go through them everyday.
Brightest Blessings

There is mind, spirit and body in yoga (maybe a couple others-don't know.) Also Father, Son and Holy Ghost. There is also the Life-Death-Life Mother in the feminine traditions. I'm sure there are many more! 3 seems to be a very important number in many spiritual rights!

Actually, many associate #3 with change, just like 11:11 and 3:33. It's not necessarily bad luck, it's just sign that something is going to change. Whether its small or large.

it is a very powerful number in a lot of traditions, and in mathematics. i know that in Hinduism, there is a trinity of gods, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, the creator, maintainer, and destroyer. basically all religions hold three as being important. it is a very balanced number i suppose. plays always have tree acts, two is a coincidence, three is a pattern, etc.
