Lord of the Rings. (Think of the movies as just a few of the action parts brought to life, with all the thinking of the characters and development of the story still hidden in the book.) I liked it because it showed that everyone has a place in life, a meaning, an effect on the lives of others. It also shows that people can change, people who are selfish or afraid or have given up can still gain courage and strength and act valiantly. My favorite line (which is on my car AND my refrigerator): "Not all who wander are lost."

Battle Royale
by Koushun Takami
The premise of the story alone was enough to intrigue me.
With a rise in youth crime, the Japanese government decides to take action by starting the Battle Royal Program. A middle school class is chosen at random and trapped on a deserted island and the only way to escape is by killing their classmates.
Yeah, I know it sounds morbid, but there are some more circumstances to it. As I read it I found myself wondering what I would have done in a similar situation. It forced me to discover some things about myself that I might not have considered otherwise. Then, there was a twist at the end that just made my head spin.
Any book that can move me like that deserves some recognition. Plus, the movies were great too, but the book was still much better.

The best book that I have ever read so far is, "The Grapes of Wrath" ... I admire this novel because it's an older book and its a story dating back to the Great Depression ... not sure why, but I always like reading about the history during that time era

I'll tell you what my favorite book is but it doesn't mean that it is the best book ever. my favorite novel is "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens. i love the novel because I can feel Oliver's adventures, tears, sufferings and fears. You'll feel the urge to run into the scene and protect him from the villains. You feel the need to fight with him when they say something nasty about his mother. This is the novel that can be considered as Dickens' autobiography. A writer who creatively writes about his childhood without clearly stating that it was him who is writing about is brilliant.
Best book, I will surely go for the Harry Potter books. Harry Potter is the most unreal character to me but I learned the most valuable lessons in life from reading it.
