It's a 1997 Geo Tracker. GEO TRACKER. Think about that for a second. What do you think he should do? Isn't it obvious?

i would try flushing the transmission or it could be the linkage as well or you might end up having to replace the whole transmission but the 1st thing u should do is flush it and go from there because my next door neighbor had a 1995 Geo Tracker and he was having the same problem and it turned out that the transmission just needed flushed

Try getting under the truck with a can of WD 40 and spray everything that looks like it might have a moving part, then try shifting a little, working it loose, if that don't help, you might have to take it to a local transmission shop, and have them check it out. It could be just worn out bushings.
