I agree with Judith. People grow up, gain responsibilities, get real jobs. They no longer want or need to be known as punks. The same goes for hip-hop or heavy metal. Who are you rebelling against and why? They used to say in the 60's not to trust anyone over 30. But how old are those same people now?! They are at least in their 50's!!

Growing up, having kids of your own, paying real bills and real taxes keeps any counter-culture down. And as others have mentioned in their answers, the media has decided to push things like hip hop, rap, and heavy metal. I remember a time when rap was as "underground" as punk, and when thrash metal was only known by a small audience worldwide.

One day soon, even you will wake up realizing that you are over 30 as well, wondering how you "got so old" and where your youth went. Don't fret about it... embrace it. It happens to even the most rebellious souls. Because there is nothing more pathetic than a 50 year old "rebel without a clue."

Peace,
VT

Just the fact that it's still in existence after over 20 years is amazing. The punk population has always been a small faction of people and probably will remain so. There aren't ever more than 10% of people who comprise a counter-culture. It's just as well, who would we piss off if everyone was on board?

If you expect rebellion to be mainstream then you are missing the point. Punk was never meant to be a new fashion, it was meant to tell people that fashion is foolish. At least thats what I get from it.

ehh, the problem with punk is that it is a "white person's" music...no offense meant by this, but you know it is true, it came out of california and out of the u.k. mainly at the hands of young caucasians...which wouldn't be a problem, except....

in america, folks can criticize "white music" freely, whereas if you just come out and say "crunk is just stupid" (for example), folks call you a hater and a racist, sight unseen (never mind that crunk lyrics, on average, are stupid, and that there is only one beat really). this is why CEOs love to push rap and hip-hip in america so, because they know that folks have issues and that those issues make the "music" impervious to criticism, even from other African-Americans (Bill Cosby anyone? He thinks crunk is dumb too.).

Not to mention....punk has as one of its guiding principles the art of being ugly (trying to be punk in writing this by not using caps, not working because I am a lame old fart, *lol*). Meaning, punk is supposed to be loud, ugly and about the ripped clothes, bad hair and deilberately trashy look....

Which makes it a big'ol'target for public criticism.

But like another poster said, it's held on for 20 years plus now, and that is a miracle, really.

Since most people have punk in them but don't want to admit it. Rap and R&B seem like a better alternatives to say that they listen to. Every one loves a punk band, but they keep it quiet so that they won't be judged by peers. I am a punk/goth rocker myself. I love punk and goth. The style they both have, even though most think it's hypocritical, it's not. Emo rocks as well. Screamo, metal, alternative, hell even classical music are all very good. I say screw what other people think and listen to what you want not what they want!

Because the media will not allow it. They would rather push rap on you.
