I am a big time movie buff, I watch a lot of movies, but lately I haven't been able to find any good movies, does anybody have any recommendations. I am particurly fond of comedys, action/thriller, war, and some drama. Not really into musical, chick flicks, old movies (70's and later) and some westerns.

If you like good independent pieces (that aren't big flashy blockbuster style, big studio films), then "The Year That Trembled" is a good one that many may not know about and I had wished got a wider distribution. Mostly because indi films don't always get the attention they deserve, it did get a bunch of awards and stuff from festivals though. Came out on DVD in the end of '03.
"Plot Outline The Year That Trembled is a 1970 coming-of-age story set in the shadow of Kent State that focuses on a group of young characters facing the Vietnam Draft Lottery."

here are a cpl of my favorites, "doc" with stacy keach and harris yeulen[sp] its a very realist/ interesting take on the gunfight @ ok coral. and "zulu"[ not zulu dawn or shaka zulu... but "ZULU"] real nice actoin moive about a true standoff between the brits and zulus cira 1870's i think..... on the lighterside... "lillies of the field" with sidney potier.. is enspiring and although an oldie still holds up in quality..... enjoi oh , and even though you said no musicals, west side story and moulon rouge are realy quality flics.... ok for that i owe you another great ; "paths of glorly" w/ kirk douglas.... i cant believe you haven"t seen all of these since you say your a "buff" but i picked these because they are amongst the movies i've seen and enjoied many times... that said , how about "slap shot" and "moby dick"[ circa1962]??? sorry i read your question wrong [ comprehesion police] ithought you liked "old "movies... sorry.... go see these... you will, like them.
OK if you seen all these and can stand "sub titels" try "CYCLO"[ a bit poetic but brings you right into the heart of sai gon..... "Z" great movie, great twists, "INDOCHINE" great histoical flick about the beginings of the french viet nam war. and if you can find it anitalian movie about the early times of forming uions in italy called "the organizer" i hate sub titels and i hate to read ... but saw these movies at leaste twice each... very good,,, important movies

This is an Australian movie so I am not sure if you can get in the US, but its title is "Lantana" it stars Geoffrey Rush and Barbara Hershey. The name is actually a kind of plant that grows like a vine and winds its way around things which is a metaphor for how the story unfolds. I think it is well written, acted, unforgettable and makes you think about your prejudice's.

Weird duo - Bob Hoskins and Tom Berenger star in a thriller called "Shattered" from the 80s. Cheesy in parts, but a good story.
