Tradition. That way the 1B can begin infield warm-ups with the other infielders while his pitcher is warming up, without yelling at someone to throw him a ball.

have you ever noticed between innings, while the pitcher is throwing his warmup pitches, well the 1st baseman is throwing ground balls to the other 3 infielders during this time. when the ump signals to play ball, the ball is thrown to the pitcher, of course, and play resumes. after the 3rd out, the ball is typically left on or near the mound for the opposing pitcher, and someone in the dugout tosses another ball to the 1st baseman for the next inning.

because the first baseman warms up the rest of the infield while the pitcher is taking practice pitches. So he leaves the ball in his glove in between innings.

It's "always" the 1st baseman. He keeps it in in glove until the next inning. He throws grounders to the other infielders so they can get lose, and he doesn't ever forget to bring a ball with him...

He uses that ball for warmups for the next inning. He warmups the infielders before each defensive inning.

The ball is thrown to him, so that next inning, he has one to use to warm up his infield with.

because he will need it to start infield practice the next half inning while his pitcher is taking his warm up tosses.

The ball is given to put in his trapper to help holds it's pocket in shape when the glove is not in use.
