would you shoot steel shot with a 1953 12 gauge

Personally I'd only shoot lead shot in it. At the time the gun was made, that was what was used. The metal of the barrel can be deformed by too much steel shot being run thru it. The barrels of the newer shotguns are harder and can handle the steel shot.

no gun is too old to shoot. But i would have it looked at to make sure the stock, barrel, and all the other parts are working and in good condition to be fired.

Many weapons that are old have cracks in the stock and the barrel gets rusty causing it to literally explode at the weak points. Other than that if the gun is kept up, kept oiled, kept cleaned, stored indoors, then it should be in proper firing condition.

I would first take it to my local gun-smith and see what shape he considers my shotgun to be in then go from there But there are many rifles out that are well over 200 years that are still shooting well.
