I have a really good reason to want to go to the University of British Columbia. It has one of the best departments of asian studies on the north american continent, it is ranked 4th in Canada and I can afford it. Not to mention I'm sure I can get in. It is just far away. How can I convince them that this is as food for them as it is for me?

I may be wrong, but I believe that it is much cheaper to go to school in Vancouver? I also just got back from a Semester at Sea and traveled around the world, and tell them that this is a small world and you're never going to experience the wonders that are out there if you stay around one place your whole life!! GOOD LUCK!!

You're an adult now. Act like one. If you have researched this facility as much as it appears you have, and you are footing the bill (or incurring your own student loans), then you need to stand up and TELL them (respectfully) that you are going. It's time to cut the apron-strings. They might be a little miffed about it at first, but if you flourish there and give them no reason to tell you "I told you so" then they will back off....and eventually show respect for your decision-making ability.

Good Luck!

First of all, if you can afford it, then it really isn't your parents choice, it's yours.

If by "I can afford it" you mean that your parents can, then you have to convince them. Keep explaining to your mom that it has a really good department in what you want to study. It wouldn't hurt to tell your dad that the Winter Olympics will be up there in 2010.

Its also expensive to live in Vancouver, as I understand.....though I guess you might be staying in the dorms. Just explain to them how much you want to go. That's the only advice I can give.

it all depends on why they wont let you go. show them that u r responsible. that you can take care of yourself. do stuff to encourage them to let you go.
