In all states you must have a CDL( Commercial Drivers Licensee)
You must have a Class -A for tractor trailers, Class-B for straight trucks or Class-C for buses or vehicles carrying more than 16 passengers. Most trucking companies will train you through their own schools or you can go to an independent school( many companies will send recruiters to the schools for hiring certified drivers.)

The amount of money you can make depends on several variables, 1) whether or not you drive local or over the road(OTR).
2) how much the company pays you for each mile you drive.(OTR) or by the hour(local)
3) The load you are hauling has no determining factor in how much you make unless you are an owner operator and yes owner operators can make anywhere from $60-$100,000+ per year but they also have the responsibility of making the truck payments, insurance, fuel and repairs. Most companies require that you drive as a company driver or have at least one year before you are eligible to become an owner operator with their company.

I have been driving trucks for 25 years now and to be honest with you, driving a truck is a great way to earn a living and travel and you will always be meeting new people everyday, and with the way traffic is in some cities now days, you will need to have alot of patience and be willing to learn something new everyday. Some days are perfect and then there will be days which will push you to your limits.

Good luck to you and happy truckin

In most states you have to get a commercial driver's license (CDL). The salary depends on the type of company you work for, and whether you are driving locally or interstate.
