NOT AT ALL! I actually got a $50,000 scholarship for it!!!!! Definately do all the community service you can! It can only make you a better person! We need more people like you in the world today!
Just make sure you also look into service programs through your school, internet, place of worship, etc. Especially the Presidential Community Service Challenge and the Prudential Spirit of Community Award (Of which I've won the Presidential award 6 times and the Prudential award once and got to go to Philadelphia for a big ceremony. Them and many others love to offer all kinds of awards, grants and scholarships to hardworking, goodhearted people like you!! And in the future it will look *fantastic* on resumes, job applications and more!
May I be the first to say, THANK YOU!!!

Seems like your dad is a real genuis, not....I don't know what plans you have for school or what your grades are like, but the fact is that many colleges base admissions NOT solely on your transcripts, but on your extra-cirricular activities as well. This includes community sevice.
On top of that, depending on your future interest in large animal or pet care, this service will provide you insight to the requirements and activities that are performed on adaily basis. You'll also possibly be exposed to people within the career field that may guide you, network with and possibly EMPLOY you in the future.
I'd think a parent would want you to be involved in a worthwhile activity rather than sitting around all summer just looking for trouble.
One final thing, if the reason your father is against he idea is because you're only looking for a reason to hang out and screw around with your friends, than I'd agree with him. Remember, you're there to contribute, to WORK. Show him you can be responsible and share with him what you get to do each day and make him see that you're doing something you're proud to be involved in

I think it is great that you want to do community service, it shows that you have a caring and giving heart. I don't know what to tell you about your dad, it sounds like he is not very easily convinced, just tell him the truth that you want to help people and that is what you want for your career and because you are so young and without experience that you just want the chance to gain the experience so that you can work and get paid later on. Tell him nothing ventured, nothing gained. Besides it is not as though you are a child who is unaware of the decisions that you are making(or trying to make) you are nearly an adult and you have a right to do something that is going to help you in the future and this is something that could help you.
Good Luck!!

I sure wish I could talk to your dad for you because I admire your idea. If my son asked me the same question I would say yes because it really would be a good experience.
My oldest son got himself in a little trouble 5 yrs ago and had to do community service and he went to a nursing home and they let him work and he had the best time around all the older people helping them out. They offered him a job after he put in all his required hours but he did not stay. But he did go back and visit once in awhile.

Tell your Dad that community service is a great activity that colleges love to see students involved in, and it can help your chances of getting in. Also, as someone else pointed out, there are scholarships available for students with a strong commitment to community service.

Wanting to volunteer and give back to your community is a wonderful thing. To convince your dad just tell him it looks great when you apply for college. Also it looks good on job applications.

is your dad a total moron? he should be proud that he has a caring giving kid. you are interested in doing something great and he is giving you a hard time ? would he rather you be on the corner smoking crack , i don't think so, but this is just wierd. tell him how great it will look on a resume and most colleges these days really like that on an application, it is a great idea all the way round.

Tell your dad that you may want to be a vet. and you want to see if you have what it takes now so you will be prepared for it when you get ready for college. It is a good ideal to work around what you want to do before you start college that way you will know if that is the field you want to work in. I worked in a nursing home and decided that nursing was not what I wanted.

Not at all, if you want to help people then you should. it sounds like you are a vervy giving person and it would actually be wrong of you not to help others. If it makes you feel good then you should do it.
