I had the same problem on my 92 gmc. The cat. is whats making you truck not so loud. You cant legally remove it or gut it out. But if you know someone who will inspect it your good to go. Just cut it off and put a flowmaster back in its place. The best thing to do is put a high flow race cat on it. Summit racing sells them. Just put it in the place of your old cat. it prob. needs it any way. The race cats. dont restrict your flow and dont muffle the sound hardly at all. Then you put a flowmaster behind that cat. and you got a performance sound.

I'm running 2 1/2 inch exaust with 18" glass packs on my '69 Ford. When I rev it sounds like my pistons are coming out the pipes. Loud with no problems with cops.

I would call a reputible exhaust mechanic and ask what they think about the limit. a good mechanic who knows what they are doing can tell you.
