sounds like you downloaded mp3s... which will play on some players and not on others.

If you downloaded MP3's and then burned them as that file then they can only be played on a compatible player. However if you want to convert them to WAV files then you can play them on any standard cd player. You can convert MP3's to Wav's by using MusicMatch. Warning though. Wav files are large. They will eat up a small hard drive in a hurry.

Do they play as in you use them on a stereo system in the house?
Or do they play on the computer?
I'm not sure what the problem is, but it sounds like you made a CD that is OTHER then a Audio CD, such as an MP3 CD, or a WMA CD.
Try burning the CD again.
What software are you using BTW?

It depends on the format of the downloaded songs.
For example, mp3s only play on an mp3 player.
I had to convert a bunch of songs from my playlist to (I think) .wav files before I could play them on the cd player attached to my sound system.

yes, u have to have a certain type of cd. I had this problem too. You burned music onto a RW disk, which is rewritable. RW disks don't work in certain cars and don't always work in certain cd players. You need to buy CD-R disks, which are just readable disks and work in everything.
