Honda Civic for gas mileage and price. Toyota Corolla for reputation and quality.

I would strongly recommend the Honda.
I don't own either of these but I have ridden in both. More importantly, I had a friend who was a "natural" talented slalom driver (and former owner of more than thirty cars-serially, not as a collection) and he could not MAKE a borrowed Toyota Corolla perform around the slalom course.

Both are great cars, they will both provide you with top notch mpg's, both are at the top as far as reliability. I personally like the civic though.
