1. History is the study of our past. It is a self analysis of what the world has accomplished over the many years that history has been recorded.
2. The role of the historian is to keep track and make sure that all aspects of history (or current events) are recorded for future generations to remember and reccollect about.
3. The problems that we encounter from trying to learn the past is sometimes we can over analize artifacts that are found and try to piece them to other parts of history that they do not belong to. The other thing that we have a problem with is the fact that many of the mistakes that have been made in the past are continued to be made in the future.

Here's some starters, though I don't believe anyone ought to give you the full answer.
1.) Take the definition of history from a dictionary. Rephrase it so it doesn't sound like plagiarism. Believe me, the teacher can tell straight out if you're copying word for word, my grandmother is one.
2.) State in the opening paragraph what history means to you. Something along the lines of, it's a written record of events that traces back to the development of early culture and civilization and continues to this day and age.
3.) Historians...find the definition, rephrase.
4.) Say what the word means to you, in plain English, once again, to show to the teacher you comprehend. I'd word it this way, "historians are the guiding hand that chronicle and research these events so that people of the present and future have a reference guide."
5.) Make sure the opening paragraph lists some problems. Here's a few: historical bias, missing viewpoints... then find the rest. Think about it, if you wanted to know everything there is to know about... the AZTECS, let's say, how could you? If you read something written in the time period, by a Spaniard, he'd probably say horrible things as the Spaniards used and mistreated the Aztec people, saw them as savage, and then robbed them of their national riches. So reading what a Spaniard wrote back in the DAY would be misleading, since it'd be BIASED and show only his viewpoint. Another example, you wouldn't read Hitler's account of the history of the Jews as he'd not say any of the positive, and say only the negative. So BIAS is an important thing, and the source of the historical account NEEDS to be looked at to make sure it's someone that can be trusted.
Then again, depending on how old you are, that might sound too formal. I have a strong English background and it'll show in your paper if you lift what I say word for word, and any teacher can google a quote and it will lead her right to this page. Words of wisdom...

history is always writen by the winner. imagine if the Germans had won WW2 in Europe then the history books would have said that Hitler was the grates leader and person ever and that the allied powers were the evil ones.
the role of a historian is to try to find out what about the past is true and what is made up
some of the problems encounterd when trying to learn the truth are conflicting testimonies or writings the historians have to find out wich is true and wich is false

Ask if your school has a JSTOR account - there's thousands of academic essays on there that are perfectly reliable to quote from and have strong academic integrity. If not, ask around to see if you know anyone who does, it's particularly likely if you have a friend/relative at university with an ATHENS logon that lets them use the service from a non-university-networked pc. Other than that, I suggest asking your teacher if he/she has any books, or another member of staff in the same department. Ignore the condescending fool who gave you a sermon about young people not using a library, they are clearly illiterate as evidenced by the fact they didn't actually read your question. If, however, you have some time before this essay is due in (1-2 weeks), then it may be worth researching the titles and ISBN numbers of some books that you think are useful on the internet, and then taking these to your local library. I know you said that they are not very well equipped, but quite often libraries close to each other work in conjunction, and they may be able to borrow this book on your behalf from another library. Only other thing I can think of is Google Books, it's a book search feature of Google that actually scans texts and uploads them. It's free to use, but can be frustrating at times because they intentionally leave out some pages in order to encourage you to buy the book. Best of luck.

History is essentially anything that happened before the present. A historian is one who studies documents and basically lives and breathes history. Language barriers are a big problem. We still have no cracked the only Indus language and only recently, in respect to all of history, with the discovery of the rosetta stone were we able to read hieroglyphics. Another problem is the destruction of many of the ancient documents through wars and natural occurances.

History is the written account of the exploits of mankind. The Historian is a person who does research and writes what he or she finds. The biggest problem with history is that it is often written to please the government so failures are omitted and victories are exaggerated.
