75% of your body muscle is comprised of water. Your body functions need minerals, salt, etc to keep you alive. When you tear, the body is expelling those and you can taste it. Ever try tasting your pits? I'VE NEVER TRIED, but if you did, it would be salty too. It's also why animals like to lick you. They are getting salt from your skin that is perspirating minerals, salts, etc.

Tears are, in reality, salt water

Saline solution is the same physical makeup of human tears, which is why it is used in optical cleaning products, like contact lens solution.

They don't. I've just torn my trousers and the tear doesn't taste of salt in the slightest.

beacause tears are made from the same materials as salt water form the sea and when you cry the tears are full of salt
