I've applied thousands of gallons of paint and wouldn't apply gloss any more unless my arm was twisted. Semi gloss can work in kitchen ofr bath, but decent satin paints look nicer and clean as well.

You may prime, but first you should take the energy and put it into sanding the gloss off. Gloss is meant to be an easy cleanup, and not allow strong adhesion.

Gloss or flat (or semi-gloss) all depend on whether the walls are straight. how much traffic will be walking by the wall and what kind of look you really want. Flat shows hand prints, scrapes, etc really easily. Gloss shows imperfect walls really easily. That would be why semi-gloss or eggshell are so popular.

I would think a darker red in a flat finish with semi-gloss oranges/reds around it would look pretty cool as long as they aren't super bright colours. Depending on where it is used.

Yes use a sanding sealer or primer first. Flat paints hide the flaws in your wall, while any with semi, or high gloss tend to bring out the flaws; but they wash well.

gloss or semi gloss if it's a bathroom or kitchen.
the only other time to use the glossy paint is when you are doing a faux finish.
go w/ eggshell. it is soft and not too matte.
good luck!
