How do they tally the points in the World Cup? I don't mean how many goals each team scores. How do they come up with the points?

max 6 points needed to move to the next round
3 points earned for a win
1 point earned for a tie
0 points for a loss
ties at the end of the round for each group result in lowest GD (Goal Differential) difference between goals for (GF) and goals against (GA).

to extend on this... 197 teams around the globe qualify for 32 spots divided in groups of 4 (8 groups A-H). Each team in each group plays one another (3 opponents = 3 games) which accounts for the first 48 games in the cup. The top two teams of each group then compete in the round of 16 teams (beginning June 24 11AM EST on ABC in US). Only 8 games (games 49-56) are played to decide the final four (Quarterfinals beginning 11AM ESTJune 30 on ESPN). The final four games (Semifinals) begin July 4th to decide the final two and 3rd place positions.

It's a point system per group...

3 pts for a win
1 pt for each team in a draw
0 pts for the losing team

If 2 teams end up with the same number of points, "Goal Difference" (the number of goals scored- number of goals scored against you) is used to rank those teams.

If two teams are tied on goal difference as well, it actually comes down to the toss of a coin to decide who moves on.

Once we're out of the group stage however, a loss means automatic removal from the tournament. Thus, you'll start seeing games come down to penalty shootouts because a winner must be decided.

3 points for a win, 1 pt for a tie, 0 for a loss. The two teams in each group with the highest points move on to the round of 16. In event of a tiebreaker its decided by a goal differential which is the number of goals a team has scored in total minus the number of goals that team has conceeded

A win earns 3 points, a draw earns 1 point and loss no points. If the teams are tied at the end of the round, they look at the goal differential which means they look at the number of goals the team has scored and how many they have conceded. The team with the higher goal diff will go through.

3 points for a win, 1 for a tie. the tiebreaker after group-play is GD(goal differential), bascially all the goals u've scored minus all you've allowed.

Every win is three points no matter the score difference. a draw or a tie is one point and a loss is zero points. I hope you get it.
