Im not a huge rap fan but everybody has their own musical taste. If there was only one kind of music the world would be boring.

If you're forgetting about a song in a week then that song isn't all that good to begin with. But not all rap is like that. I just made a CD a couple of weeks ago with some rap songs on there from 15-20 years ago. Let me tell you they still hold up. In some cases-like Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Tribe Called Quest- they hold up a lot better than some glamrock hairbands counterparts of the time-Warrant, Poison, etc. By the way I love chicken.

First of all the rap that is popular today hasn't been around as long as the rock you probably listen to so we can't listen to rap from forty years ago. And second, people still listen to Old-school rap all the time. But it's just like any other genre what's in is in for the moment, then something new comes along. People listen to rap just for the same reasons you listen to rock, they like it.

first thing is first. Rap is not music. Rap is talking to music, not singing to music. It does not take ANY talent to talk to a beat.
I am a musician, and I know it takes a lot of work to actually play music. I have seen what it takes for real vocalist to maintain and practice their voices.
Rap is a fad. Mostly a THUG fad. My kids have been forbidden to listen to what i call gangster rap, or crap rap. That is the rap where they talk about sex, gangs, or killing. (A lot of the rap is based here)
For those who WILL bash me for this. I have the right as a father to protect my children from gang's. Both on the street and on the radio. I have the obligation to raise them right and help them avoid getting into trouble in which most rap songs portray as good. and YES, I do listen to it when my kids have. I have listened to it on the job. (Other people listening) I know for a fact what is in it.

music of today(like movies) are being destroyed by popular culture, the younger generation are the ones who go out and buy all the CDs, and go see movies every weekend, therefore the people making the music and movies must cater to these people or they won't make any money.
rap is just a one form of music that falls into this category, but is different in the fact that it is a part of the african american culture, and you will hear classic raps songs being played 30 years from now because of it.
But you are right, bands like Zepplin are timeless and will never touch garbage that is played today

If you don't like it then don't listen to it. It's that simple.
