There are to many good places to list so in the north of Italy visit Venice, but I advise to stay just outside of the city. If you drive I recommend you find a Tratoria, they always have a room for rent and it usually includes meals. Take public trans into venice and if you can afford it stay 1 or 2 nights $200 plus for a room. Then visit the small towns between venice and Tuscani. If you are near Milan or Genova you have to visit Chiavari. A beautiful city where you can get a cheap room and visit nearby Portofino. I could go on...........

In Italy, go to the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento, Positano, Capri are some of the most beautiful places on the face of the Earth. Bring a lot of money.

In Italy, it depends what you want your vacation to be like. If you want to see many things and shop, then I suggest getting a hotel in either Rome or Florence. (NEVER try to drive in Rome. Always use taxies)
If you want a relaxing trip, go more towards the country areas and stay in a villa. Cortona is very nice.

Your lucky, I live in Pennsylvania and the farthest I have ever gone is Indianapolis which is 2 states over. It was an 8 hour drive though and I hate long drives.
