In my state, PA, it depends on an individuals age and amount of training. But I think they should have to wear helmets, because with any amount of training, a motorcyclist could still get into an accident and die because of someone else's recklessness. So I think a helmet would at least make the death rate go down, even in those cases. What do you think?

I want to make it clear to "tex"...I'm not pushing my ideas on others. I was just stating what my opinion was. Also, an hour before your response, I added detail stating that people on both sides have good points. So why tell me to "myodb?" By the way, I vote, too. And I do realize that both sides have rights to their opinion, but there is so reason to get angry at someone for posting a question and stating their opinion.

Oh, yeah...last thing I want to add here - I'm not "anti-motorcycle." I see plenty that I think are really cool. But they just aren't a part of my life, which is why I don't list them as an interest on my 360 page. And I don't think that it's the motorcycle that kills people...it's the reckless driver of any vehicle, or it's bad road conditions that does it.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I see that you don't ride Motorcycles. If you did you would the answer to this one. There are no studys that say wearing a helmet will save you're live. There are No Crach test dummeys for motorcycles.
If you ask me I feel that wearing a helmet is more dagerest then not wearing one. The full face ones block you've vew. Try one on sometime and you're see what I mean the only way you can see next to you is by turning you're head. Wich means you have to take you're eyes off of what's ahead of you. 1/2 helmets are safer but the wind gets stuck inside of them and choke you.
If they do add yet another law so motorcyclists "have to" wear helmests whats next? People in convertibles have to where helmets? Hay, you think I'm jokeing but think about it if they flip over or something falls on the driver what happens?
This use to be a free Country! Lets keep it that way if you want to where a helmet that's find if not that's cool to. If you get on a bike and die thats you're choice. But mostlikely wearing a helmet will NOT SAVE YOURE LIVE!

Having been a motorcyclist most of my life, and living in the state of Indiana, adults over the age of 18 do not have to wear a helmet. However, anyone riding on the back of your bike who is under 18 MUST wear a helmet. It is a matter of choice and preference for me not to wear a helmet. I realize and understand the risks I take every time I get on that bike. If they made it a law in my state, I would wear a helmet. To answer your question: yes, I think it should be a law in all states. There are a lot of drivers who do not respect motorcycles, who tailgate and pull in front of them. Motorcyclists always have to drive defensively, as if no one on the road knows how to drive, especially with all the idiots who drive and talk on cell phones nowadays!!! I'm not sure the death rate would be affected to a great degree, but a lot of head injuries would certainly be avoided.

No, let the individual states decide, not the federal government. There's no Federal DMV, local transportation should stay that way. If you disagree with your state's laws, vote for someone who better represents your viewpoints. Better yet move somewhere that reflects your viewpoints -- might find you enjoy your new neighbors' company more than your old neighbors'.
As for this specific question: one of the basic rules of motorcycle riding is managing your risk taking, and a corollary is owning up to chances you've taken. If you choose to be unprotected from even a simple 10mph spill, just don't be a burden on others when you lose that gamble. Personally that's a poor gamble, I'll always wear my helmet and I also wear full gear, no law requiring that even here in California.

Let me decide!!!
Weather I wear one or not I am at considerable risk in any accident due to the lack of a steal cage surrounding me.
In 2004 Florida had 388 motorcycle deaths.Of those 388 214 HAD a helmet on 174 did not have one.
So tell me again how much a helmet is going to protect me.

I think it should be up to the person riding. In Florida it`s not a law anymore to wear a helmet but if you don`t you have to have insurance on you and the bike.
I don`t wear one unless I take a long bike ride. Around town in traffic I wear one. But if I`m going for a little putt around the block or down to the store for my wife then I don`t. Bikers have to be aware at all times. People in cars aren`t looking for bikes there looking for other cars. Besides if you get hit by a car anyway on a bike chances are your not going to make it. A helmet only protects your head not your body so it should be up to the person riding!!

i think it should be the persons choice. I always wear a helmet though. Of course in california we can split through lanes too. The other thing is anyone riding with me must wear protective gear, when we go riding on winding roads even if it is the dead of summer with 100 degrees.

Yes I do! But each state governs their own law on wearing a helmet while operating a motorcycle.

I've been riding motorcycles for 34 years now and I have always used a helmet, But I also think that it should be your choice to wear or not to wear a helmet.

Nope..people have the right to kill themselves if they choose . I think this is quite similar to the seatbelt issue. Maybe they should have to see a movie before they get their license; some film with nasty head injuries incurred by helmetless motorcycle riders.

No. We have the federal governnment deep enough in our everyday lives. This is a state issue, to begin with. I note that you didn't suggest them for cars. Do you even ride? I sure don't see motorcycling in you extensive list of interests.
Where do you get off deciding what's right for everyone, anyhow? Mind your own damn business.
