I have DSL and my laptop is about a year and a half old. I want to be able to roam around my house with my computer and not be confind to one place. I have no clue what going wireless is. Please explain to me how to go wireless like I am a 5 year old. This is all foreign to me. And very confussing.

I went and bought a router and it didn't work. According to the router directions you have to connect it to the computer. That's not going wireless if I have to connect it to the computer. I don't understand this at all.

Great - you have a wireless card built in, so that will save you some cost. What you need to do is get a wireless router as described in many of the other answers. You can pick them up just about anywhere that sells computer parts, including Walmart. I recommend sticking to major brands like Linksys or Netgear as they are the easiest to use. There will be printed instructions that will tell you exactly how to hook it to your DSL line and computer. You will want to reset your DSL modem after hooking it to your router (unplug it and plug it back in). Once hooked up, simply double click the balloon that says Windows has detected a wireless network, and then tell it to connect. (The manual that comes with the router will step you through that.)

Unless your house is very large, one router should cover the whole thing and then some...so feel free to roam around. I would suggest securing your router with a WEP key (think of it as a password but with numbers) so that only those who know your key can use your router, otherwise anyone driving near your house can use your internet line...which can be bad.

Yes you can go wireless. Some laptops have a built in wireless network card which will pick up on a connection. Going to Starbucks or at school and asking someone about setting up your laptop to access the internet shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have a wireless network card built in you can buy one!

I have a 2 Year old laptop, and I've been wireless now for 3 months. I'ts easy, just plug in a wireless router, available at electronics dealer, and go. Most newer laptops have wireless cards built in. You can even make printers, and other hardware wireless.

You need a router to transmit your wireless signal. And you also have to make sure that your computer has builtin wireless or you can get a wireless card.

Set up is pretty easy, just follow the instructions, the only place I had a problem was getting my printer (hp 2510) on the wireless network. When I followed the instructions it did not work, I then uninstalled and reinstalled the printer as wireless...and voila.. it worked.

You can. Buy a wireless router and if your laptop doesn't already have one, you'll need to also buy a wireless receiver card. Hook the router up to your DSL or cable modem and run the setup wizard. You'll be wireless in 30 minutes.

If there is a wireless chip installed yes. Otherwise you have to buy one and then once that is in your computer you can. Just go to any place where there is a open wireless network connection and you can get wireless for your laptop.
