I don’t know what with all the RAM negotiations, but the fact is since your computer is fine offline, but slows, then freezes during a live connection. The deal is, you don’t need to install more memory, you need a damn good firewall. Now, if you were to stay offline & run nothing but applications & PC gaming products & your computer slows down, then you would have to install bigger RAM cards. But this has nothing to do with RAM or DirectX. Either a virus or a Trojan horse is affecting your computer. What you need is not only a firewall, but good software scanners too. In order to have a good, clean system, you’d need a: virus, spyware, adware, Trojan horse scanners. To have a computer that will run well on or offline, you NEED to download (if you haven’t already) the latest software of: Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 (spyware scanner), Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r6 (adware scanner), BitDefender (firewall) & AShampoo (virus scanner).
I don't know what you use to download, but if you're using LimeWire to download, it will sometimes freeze & you'll have to stop it by the "End Task" button. If you do this, your computer will run normally again. You can restart LimeWire if you want.
Second Addition:
That's better since your computer is freezing less than before, but is there a big difference on how long it take to freeze? So far I can only narrow it down to a Trojan horse right now. You seriously need a firewall to block all malicious programs that are being uploaded to your computer, the scanner are your best offense, now you NEED a defense, a strong firewall. I'm using Norton Internet Security 2004, but all Norton is trash like I said. The only reason I'm using Norton's firewall is to sustain me for a while so I can find a strong firewall. To be frank, no matter how strong the firewall, the world’s top hackers can knock it down. But don't get frantic about it; the FBI has caught most of these people. All what's left are script kiddies; they can't drop a stable firewall.
I'm going by what you're saying. If it were hand-on, then I would know the problem right off.

You need a pentium class processor and dual channel ddr2 sdram memory card. Download other browsers rather than the browser you are using. Try Firefox and Opera.

Can you use the keyboard or mouse to bring up "task manager" and use it to shut down?
Sometimes turning down the graphics acceleration a notch will keep that from happening until you can add more memory.
If it's not memory:
Check and see if you have the latest driver for your video card.
Also check for updates for your "DirectX".
