I know what direct and indirect mean. The question is when is one called for versus the other?

Direct free kicks are usually for more serious infringements of the Law, like those in Law 12.

A goal can be scored from a direct free kick and if an offence that attracts a direct free kick in the opponent's penalty area, a penalty will be awarded to the attacking team.

Indirect free kicks are usually for minor infringements, like obstruction, dangerous play and covers the range of infringements committed by goal-keepers and of course, for offsides.

A goal cannot be scored form an indirect free kick, unless touched by another player. The referee wil raise his arm to indicate an indirect free kick.

RE:
When is a free kick direct vs. in-direct? Are there rules, or does the referee just decide himself?

A free kick means you can score directly and it happens either after a handball, or under the following conditions.
1. The Ball is in play
2. The foul was directed against an opponent
3. It was on the feild of play
An Indirect kick means you can't score and happen after such things as a keeper handball (when a golies own player passes him the ball and he picks it up), offsides, an action against the referee, or spitting on an opponent.

There are rules. When it's a foul there's a direct free-kick. \that means the player may shoot. When it's a handball or a risky move, there's an indirect free-kick. The player has to pass.

Yes, there are specific rules which decide which it will be. The factors are pretty much the location, and what was the cause. Between those two things the referee knows which to call.
