Sharon is correct about how the moon shines but she is mistaken on her other point. The "shapes" of the moon are not formed because of the earth being between the sun and the moon. What she described is an eclipse. The different shapes of the moon are caused by the posistion of the sun relative to the moon. So a full moon is when the sun is directly in front of the moon and a half moon is when the sun is 90 degrees to the face of the moon and so on. A new moon (the moon isn't shining at all) occurs when the sun is behind the moon.

The sun never stops shining and it is what makes the moon shine at night. The different shapes of the moon in the sky are caused by the earth being in between the sun and the moon blocking some of the sunlight in its path.

The moons light is the reflection of sunlight off of it. You see the moon at night, because then hemisphere you live in ....assuming you live in the west is turned away from the sun and the light reflects off of it.
