I don't understand why political parties exsist, i realize that it prevents dictatorship of one party like in mexico( which is pretty much a dictator ship because there is only one dominant party, and the outgoing president gets to choose who runs as the next president for his party), but doesn't it do more harm than it does good, because if all the candidates were independent than there would not be feuding between parties and they government would be much more effective because the politicians would not try and press there veiws and attack the other side making congress take much longer than it should to pass bills and such. Why does the US have to have political parties because if there was no such thing as republican or demcrat than the govenrment would be more effective.

Because different parties have different goals and beliefs just like different churches do.

If you did not have political parties then anyone seeking office would have to be very wealthy and willing to use his own money to finance his electoral chances of winning an election. If you were not rich enough, you would have get on top of a soap box and hope by a miracle the masses would hear your message. Political parties also help ideas compete in the marketplace of ideas. The last time there were no political parties the world was ruled by kings, queens, czars, and tribal leaders.

Political parties are basically just a bunch of people with similiar political beliefs who are willing to raise money to support their cause.

In order to run for political office, you need financial support and a lot of it if your running for President. In the US, anybody can run for office but they need financial (and people support) to effectively run a campaign. Republican and Democratic parties or the largest political parties in America (and the most well-known). They are the only parties with enough resources to media-blitz the nation into voting for their candidate.

Politcal parties will always attack each other to protect their views. Any politician will tell you that they have supporters telling them "Hey, I spent a lot money on you so you can be in office so vote like I want you to"

Political parties don't have to exist, but could you imagine a country in which everyone agrees and analyzes things from the same viewpoint? Although having multiple parties causes many problems for the US, it also forces us all to consider more thoroughly our best courses of action.

I would love to see all politicians sit as independent and vote as the majority of their electors wanted. Unfortunately politics, like big business, is run by people. No system is perfect, and we really can't expect politicians to give up so much of their power to sit equally with one and other.

That makes no sense! We cant all think the same, if we did inventions would never be, philosophy wouldnt exist and that utopia you speak of would only limit us to the point of being animals... nothing more than apes.

I think you need to go back to school and learn a few things about government.

Missbofo, he's not saying everyone should AGREE. He was just saying that it would be good if all representatives and congressmen were independent rather than being affiliated with a particular political party. I've often wondered that myself!
