Yes you can :)
Just make sure you'll be there with the little girl when she'll be near a dog... If it's the first time you're getting a dog and since you have little child, start with a smaller breed of a dog: i.e.: Chuhuahua or Pamerenian (sorry for mispelled words). Those two are small and the child can play with them safely. As the child grows older they'll be the same size and won't be a threat to her no matter what her age is (before she goes off to College) The two breeds are child-friendly (as long as there was no bulldog-mix in either one of them in the past, and as long as the child won't pull on the dog's tail or do anything harmful to the dog). Bulldog puppies are a little bit more aggressive breed and they can bite without even thinking. Other breeds can be a little bit too big for the 5-year-old. If the child can understand what you say, tell the child to be gentle with the puppy and never hurt it, and use a gentle touch when petting the animal. If she'll ask "Why?" tell her that the puppy can get hurt (don't threaten her that it can bite her, otherwise she'll be afraid to approach and/or touch the puppy) and it won't be able to play with her.
Everything will be alright as long as the right precautions are taken on time and in the right way.
There are things to make sure before just to be on the safe side: get the Tetanus shots for the dog, your baby, yourself and anyone who didn't have one yet. so that way nothing bad will happen in the worst case scenario. Just to let you know, Tetanus is very serious and very deadly infection if God-forbid anyone gets it, and it doesn't happen just because of the dog bite (also from an open wound: i.e. gunshot). However, once the shots are given to the dog and the people around the puppy, they last about 10 years and after that (depending on Technology) you can just get a boost vacine to make sure that Tetanus shot you got today won't wear off in the future. Visit the vet and make sure the puppy is safe, healthy, and doesn't have any problems, as well as what to do when there's an animal emergency, whom to contact and where to go. Another thing, take other precautions to make sure that everything will peaceful and everyone will be happy on both sides: the puppy and the child. Untill the child will understand how to behave and feel safe enough near a puppy, you'll always have to be present no matter what.
To make it simpler, what would you do if you had another baby in the house? :) Having a puppy is almost the same, but with a few little exceptions: it has a tail, runs on all fours, has long ears, long nose, whiskers, and furry coat... and it can bark and wag its tail when it's happy to see you :)
Having a puppy or any animal is fun and enjoyable for everyone involved, and when safe, care and attention are present, everything's going to turn out wonderfully :)
Good luck and have fun picking out the puppy for your child :)

Dont make it a big dog if you do you may get a scared child out of it. A chihuahua is good if its kinda mixed with something. I have one and its the best dog Ive ever had vs I had a labrador that I had to give away. Dog scared my son by being all over him all of the time.
