The New York Times has already declared China as the most successfull culture. It does not take riches to achieve that, merely numeric expansion. The Chinese both expanded and coopted invaders to adopt their ways.

I think you'll find a world class city if you go to Beijing, Shanghai or Nianxang. World class nation? At the macro level, they already are, arguably.

At the demographic level, well, you have such significant underdevelopment....no, make that impoverishment in the western provinces (in which the Beijing government has spent the past two decades fighting a war of secession against the Uighers) that one wonders if stability will ever come to the region.

I think it depends on what you consider world class. If that is what the US is now, then China has a long way to go in many ways. World class has been interpreted by some to mean conquering the world, such as Hitler and the Soviets tried to do. The US seems to officially define democratic institutions and values as being world class. China thinks the best way to world class is by economic might, which can fund its military. I would disagree - it must allow its people to participate in the government decisions that affect their lives through the ballot box, through easy media access, and the free right to congregate, such as in parties.

If you mean a first world nation (they are generally considered a third world nation), it really depends on how long the oil supply lasts. China is using oil at a faster pace than nearly the US. However, if China is able to sustain its growth, I suspect they will enter the rheum of a second or first world nation in 20 years.

I guess once they destroy the environment more than America has they will be "world class"?
