Thongs, also known as G-strings and T-bars, were originally designed so that a woman or man would not have a visible panty line when wearing a tight skirt or trousers. I imagine it was a fashion designer but I don't know who. Me, I love 'em - they're cooler than bikinis or briefs in the summertime and I wear them in my pool and at the beach in Cuba. But I don't like them on people who are overweight... guess that's a little hypocritical but they just don't look right. I'm female btw.

The thong was invented by Vladamir Cossotick in 1789 . He was a Russian warlord who felt it nessesary to bare his buttocks when going into battle and found that regular Y Fronts did not only limit his exposure but also tended to get a big laugh at the start of a campaign . The thong was not a success on the battlefield and was withdrawn the next season in favour of chain mail , but it was here to stay - later to find its way into the wardrobes of kate Moss and David Beckham .
