Wow.....only a skin color. With the history of slavery and crimes against blacks in this country (U S A) you would expect us to take great pride in the strides that have been taken that allow blacks the liberties that weren't actually meant for us. The constitution was written during slavery, do you really think they meant for blacks to share those rights? Now think about this, most migrate to America from other countries to make their fortune, blacks were brought here and sold as commodities for others to make their fortunes. We were bread and sold as articles or products not human beings.
You have parents and although i don't know your personal history, I can only assume that one if not both raised you.....imagine your father being sold to a slave owner 3 states away....your mother being raped and passed around by her current slave owner and you and your siblings being split up and sold to different plantations never to see each other again. But....we made it through that 400+ years of hell. (generations never knowing anything but slavery) We ran, hid, fought and were GRANTED freedom. Great we now have rights.....NO YA DON'T.....Martin, Malcolm, Emit Tills, Medger Evers, Rosa Parks, The Black Panthers, NOI, the men of the Tuskegee Experiment and others had to fight and get arrested, beaten, abused, shot at and even assassinated before we could even think about becoming real citizens of the United States. Blacks have to be proud because no matter what we've been through and what has been done to hold us down, back and put us under...WE ARE STILL HERE. It took and takes great strength and pride to get up everyday knowing you are hated because of your "skin colour". You may not think its a big deal but even the Natives of North America were hunted as game and almost wiped off this continent. We did not allow this to happen to us and we did not allow restrictions (Jim Crow) to keep us corralled and trapped in certain areas like cattle. We had to fight for our dark "skin colour" because those that took us from our country, heritage and culture no longer wanted us if they could not control us. We still struggle with certain injustices, discrimination (work / housing / legal) and issues within our own community but we'll eventually overcome those as well......You ask why? Because we have struggled to exist and excel in a foreign land and we have been able to adapt and overcome successfully. So please black men, women and children....always be proud of who and what you are because you are a true wonder, a marvel and success story that will never be matched you are BLACK.

Note: for those thay may read this and ask about other races that deal with similar issues.....the question asked about blacks specifically. I can empathize with others but I am black ....

You have to be in a black persons shoes to understand why we are proud. African Americans are the only people that had to struggle with racism all their life. And the reason why I'm proud and the millions of other blacks are proud of being black is because we survived all the negative and depression that others races put down on us. We lived through slavery and name calling and being told that we're not "good" enough to do the things that other races could do. Now we have all these well known blacks that succeeded in life. And I'm very proud of that.

People say you should be proud because for so many years (hundreds) black people were treated as less than a person. In order to help change that image, black people have stressed being proud of yourself because you are a human being and you matter versus internalizing all the outside portrayals of black people as happy go lucky stupid dancers in the past or the mammie (think aunt Jemima) or currently as Gangstas. So it's not really a matter of saying that black people are a proud people, it's a matter of being proud of your place in the world and not being afraid or ashamed to be who you are.

Good point, though I think it should be broadened to include everyone who identifies him or herself mostly on the basis of skin colour. No one should be proud to be a particular color, because like you say, it's only skin color. It's a very superficial and shallow thing to be proud of, no matter what color you are.

because throughout history black people have been continually down trodden, to survive through such hardships is truly something to be proud of.

You can be proud (not arrogantly proud) of who you are without believing that anyone different than you is inferior.
