They could also have the numbers on line for free for people with the internet. Surely printing millions of telephone books is more expensive than having a live call centre.

Live operators? That's so 1952! Why don't they stop printing the books to save trees?! When they drop one off at my house, it goes straight to the recycling bin anyway. Why pick up that unwieldy thing when I can have more complete info online in seconds?

I don't think it costs that much to print phone books. They are all filled with ads. Phonebooks here now even have tabbed ads. I'm not sure of the figures, but I wouldn't be surprised of they are making money on phones books. Also, they are already online.

Aw, Hell No!

Printing is dirt cheap! Especially in the quantities they run. Also, they make HUGE money with the yellow page ads.

Employing people is SUPER expensive...in particular, by the time you consider benefits, workers' comp insurance, and rent for the building they're in, the books are by far the way to go.

Because chopping down trees will bring us closer to the apocalypse and no, a live call center is much more expensive than printing the yellow pages.
