I don't think a misunderstanding CAN be cleared up without direct communication. Whether face-to-face or on the phone, sincerity in a person can only be judged by the other person.

Hiding behind a text message or e-mail (or, heaven forbid, a hand-written note) removes the vocal inflections, facial expressions, body language and what have you that are all subtle yet key parts of the conversation.

Anybody who is NOT willing to have a direct conversation and/or listen is simply immature, and probably isn't worth the time.

You need to sit down with the person and have an actual conversation to clarify the matter. Unfortunately, not everybody knows how to listen, which is critical.

If this is the case, I recommend you both agree on a mediator who would listen to both sides and bridge the gaps in understanding during the conversation. [Mediation is a business term, but the principle works for relationships too.]

It is amazing how many times a misunderstanding can damage a relationship forever, when in reality there was no offense involved. Too sad.

Good luck!
