We bought this house 6 months back and it is almost 4 years old. The technician said that the ductework has not been designed well. The fans, filters, coils are fine and clean.

Depends on how bad the duct work is, how much needs to be replaced, how many man hours it would take to fix. The guy didn't give you a quote?

How old is the house ?? How long ago did the house stop cooling evenly ?? Did it work ok during the last cooling season ?? Is the fan running without straining ?? Is the filter(s) clean ?? Are the coils clean in the unit ?? How reputable is the A/C guy ?? Sometimes all you need to do is balance the air flow - adjust the dampers in each room. It's a fairly simple thing to do. If you need to replace all the ductwork - cost depends on the size of the air handler unit - the CFM flow rate - etc. Too many variables !! My neighbor had a similar problem - found out that the fan blades were loaded with junk - dirt, etc. After it was cleaned, he had almost twice the air flow - and more cooling throughout the house. Cost for this - $ 125.00 - CHEAP !!!

in the mid 80's there was a flex duct that the outer layer was grey plastic. well the stuff it turns out deteriorates and falls apart. allowing the insulation to fall away from the inner tube carring the air. Wich in turn it will be exposed and fall apart, dumping air in attic. As for that big a house, if your whole system needs replaced , expect it to take 3 men 2-3 days. Cost around $2,500-3,500 or so. But get a few estimates, but you cannot wait too long, your waisting energy into the attic.

it depends on How Uneven it is working. No matter what, some parts of the house are going to e cooler then others because they are closer to the central unit. My room is right under the central unit and it's freezing while the livingroom is on the other end of the house and is a much bigger room so it's not as cool, obviously. If it's a problem you can live with I say don't waste your money. Close your vents more on rroms that are closer to the central line and it will dispurse air more evenly to rooms that are further away. Just think physics.

that is what is called an estimate. get quote from two more and see what they say. if they say same "duct work is undersized" then you can have it remedied. Never take word of one contractor.
