omg...i hate this question...no offence. ne ways, @ my school, the athletic director wants to take cheerleading totally away and he does not consider it a sport. but whatever. i am a cheerleader and i agree totally with sarah b (she's my bff) and ne ways, if you go to a real cheerleading camp, you are outside from around 7am to about 11 @ night running, doing push-ups, jumping jacks, etc. and then you are doing drills, cheers and stunts. also you dance and do gymnastics. all of this takes place in 90 and 100 degree heat. you have practice for hours everyday and really, cheerleaders work harder than some of the guys playing football or basketball. so yes...i think cheerleading is a sport. plus...someone said that cheerleaders don't compete...well yes we do. it's called cheer competition. all the cheerleaders from billions of different schools compete against each other to win the trophy and state or national title or whatever. we go and represent our school. without cheerleaders...who would cheer on the actual players...because the parents surely don't...they are too hard on their kids...so the cheerleaders cheer them on & encourage them. i think all the girls that don't think cheerleading is a sport need to try it and find out how much work girls actually have to do to be a cheerleader....then watch them say it isn't a sport. and to the guys.....you have problems.

Sure - you exercise competitively and go through specific training. I'm not sure the PURPOSE of cheerleading is very powerful though; I mean it originated so girls can stand by on the sidelines and cheer along the men's football team in tiny little skirts. Pretty lame beginnnings if you ask me. I guess it's good that today's cheerleaders are taking it into their own hands to bring the sport beyond the football field and into larger arenas and competitions!
p.s. Strippers also work hard to better their technique - would you consider them athletes???

no, because if cheerleading is a sport, so is modeling, not to be shallow. cheerleading requires practice, fitness, etc but explain to me how you can beat someone in cheerleading. its a competition. oh, well, i guess ribbon dancing and ice dancing are sports too. gymnastics is a sport. cheerleading is a competition.

HECK YES! We work really hard and if u don't think it is a sport just try it or go to a practice. And stunting and tumbling aren't easy either. It is one awesome sport that requires strength, agility, flexibility, teamwork, dedication, and the ability to take any body part hitting you in the head!!!!

I am a cheerleader and I personally think it is. I mean, we're moving around, and doing tons of gymnastics and things. At the end of practice I'm always sweating. So ya, I think so.

"Chearlead" [spelled correctly] means to lead organized cheering, as at sports events.
According to this definition at Dictionary.com, it has not been officially recognized as such.
"Sports" is a physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively (or a particular form of this activity).

I believe that it is an activity that requires physical strength, training, ablilty, and tons of practice.
But I don't actually believe that it is a sport, purely based on that you hardly ever compete.
You probably hate me now.
