my 40 year old son & his girlfriend will not leave my house the police stated nothing can be done I need help here

I'm assuming they are renters so you can't just throw them out. You'll have to serve them eviction notices. In california you can be given a 30 day notice to leave. If they aren't out after 30 days the marshalls (police) will come and remove them. I'm not sure of the procedure so you'll probably need some leagal help or if you know someone who's a landlord they can explain the process.

If your son is over 18, then all you gotta do is change the locks, throw all their stuff out on the lawn, with a nice note that says get a job, and then rent the room out to someone else or turn it into a gym.

If you have gone to the police and they won't help then you should contact a lawyer about what your options are legally to make them leave.

yes there are take him to court go to the court and draw up the papers asking him to leave in 30 days or else.it the law
