So many people, both on here and off, attack others' personal lives based on their political beliefs and I just can't understand it. It makes no sense to say that all liberals have "nasty personalities" or that conservatives all want to kill people. The ad hominem attacks are not only unproductive and nonsensical, but always further your opponents' view that your side is full of morons and/or nutjobs.

So we should move beyond "liberal" and "conservative"? What if you are liberal, or liberal best fits your political views? Why be subject to ridiculous attacks simply because you chose a brief way to express your views?

They don't know how to argue based on facts, so they attack people based on their beliefs and make assumptions about them based on their affiliation. unfortunately, as long as there are ignorant people around, these types of attacks will continue. the best thing people can do is educate themselves about their own political beliefs, so they can argue why they think their beliefs are good ones, rather than how much someone sucks b/c they have different beliefs.

I agree. The current state of politics is filled with lots of personal attacks. I guess we see so much of it on Answers, but it does bleed into real life quite a bit with political campaigns. I think people on the Internet are more prone to it because it's easier to hide and attack behind a keyboard than doing it to someone's face. Also, many of the people who participate are more extreme and more passionate about their point of view.
Those who are more moderate may not care enough to post their views on some random Internet site.
I think there's a need for some opposing views so that one side doesn't get out of hand. The two party system isn't great, but it vaguely helps in the checks and balances. With just one side, either liberal or conservative, things might get out of hand. The third parties don't really get votes until watershed events with major political changes, but they do help bring awareness to certain issues that the primary 2 parties have to respond to.
I don't know. You could argue that it's "easier" to just attack rather than make good arguments, but a lot of the hot-button issues don't have a direct solution and they're more personal point of view. And that's where the biggest flame wars start, both in religion and in politics. Maybe that's why I shy away from the area. It's too depressing.

that's the they were raised. Views are cultured either through political or, mostly, religious beliefs. people nowadays, "intelligent people" are always the ones who believe they know the answer to everything bcuz of what they believe. POlitics and religion are a waste of time and hinder rather than help. These blind people to truths or real solutions to problems. If it doesn't fit in their perspective, it's wrong. It's whatever God says is the right way or whatever the bunch of idiots they follow say is the right answer. all of them are nutjobs and are to ignorant to realize that. All these people suffer from Invincible ignorance. Put a gun to their head and it still wouldn't change their minds. they'd rather die in ignorance than realize the truth. sad and totally pathetic.

The one thing Americans are really good at is Hate. We love to hate people and blame people. If we have an opportunity to blame someone for things going wrong in our lives we will. Here on Yahoo Answers I think they are more trying to come out with the most offensive question than a true issue question. Its a great snapshot of America, the American people are more than happy arguing amongst themselves inside their homes and on the computer, but have very little civic participation when it comes to actually trying to change things for what they feel is right.

Because of human nature. We tend to view that our opinion is right so if I am a Republican than the Democrats are all idiots or Visa versa. It is sad that we must filibuster and hold up our whole government because we can't get along. Kindergartners get along better, at least they will compromise. The U.S. is being crippled by these unnecessary battles, instead of concentrating on getting the job done. It annoys me that it is like that, it didn't used to be.

because they forget that both dems and repubs are both politicians and self serving. As Hugh Downs points out there is no two party system in america only them against us.... them being the special interests with the money controling the laws and the right thing for governments to be doing, ie protecting the pursuit of happiness being scrapped.... Sry I can't express myself better and hope you get the gist of my anxiety.

People are to lazy and ignorant to look at and respect other peoples views. It is much easier to cut people down and call them 'uneducated' because people dont like facing the fact that no side is any more correct than the other.
