I live in SoCal where we can get temps over 100 degrees in July through October. I grow mine in a garden that is shaded for most of the day and only gets a few hours of late afternoon sun. That particular bed is located in a drainage swell, too so it stays pretty moist most of the time. I use epsom salt around the base to change the color of the blooms to blue. I also prune it back yearly in the autumn after it is finished blooming. It comes back bigger and with bigger blooms every season.

The above answers all apply. Hydrangeas are pretty low maintenence ,depending on which type. The blueish/purplish type flowers can be manipulated if you add or subtract acid in the soil. Ph Neutral is roughly 6.6-7.0 in your soil. By adding sulfur(garden supply store) you can drastically add acid and change the color.
They will do perfectly well in the FULL sun and will produce bigger blooms as long as it gets regular moisture . Will also do well in sun/shade and heavier shade. The more shade, the less dense the plant will be, but it will still do well and flower.
All the extra tidbits abouts nails etc, or acid fertilizers, will work because they change the PH in the soil around the plant . Hope it helps

I live in W N C and they need very little work. If I want them to have the bright blue flowers then I put rusty nails in the dirt. Not kidding, something to do with the chemical release. I also use a flowering feeding program every 7 days. Miracle Grow. In these parts they come back year after year bigger and bigger. They like sun to bloom.

Our hydragneas grow well on the north side of our home, and need little tending.Water when dry, and feed it when it shows signs that it's about to bloom.

I do not do anything to mine except prune in the fall. It is drought tolerant and is about 6' tall and 7'round, and it flowers every year.

Just from my little experience, they need lots of water, keep damp always and just indirect sunlight. They don't do well in scorching heat or dryness. Good luck.
